I was doored on April Fools Day
Apr 2nd, 2008 • Category: BlogYesterday was April fools day; a perfect day to start my training for Kona 08. I have not been on my bike since July 07 and yesterday was my first outing. We have been struggling trying to balance the kids and yesterday we finally had some help so I was able to carve out a block of time; 2 hours was my goal.
My bikes just came back from GURU with their new paint scheme and color so I was really looking forward to getting on my bike and start my training. I left the house around 10:30 in the morning with the plan to ride the loop and then out and back Canada.
As I manuvered through the neighborhoods to get to my route the next thing I knew I hit a car door and was flat on the ground. HOLY MOLY, is this a joke? I got up and yelled “UNBELIEVABLE, this is my first ride in 8 months!” The woman was shaken up and was very nice, but it still totally sucked.
I feel I am a defensive rider, I look in side mirrors and back windows as I ride by parked cars to try and prevent these type of episodes. I was lucky in that I did see her first and new she was going to open the door so I had some time to react and swing out of her way but it was not enough as the door hit my neck and shoulder.
The best part of this story is the woman who hit me was… get this, a REALTOR!! My own kind!! Can you believe it? It was tour day (where agents jam from house to house to look at property for clients) and she was doing just that, jamming, trying to see as many houses as she could in the 3.5 hours allowed.
The even better part of this story is it was 6 minutes and 40 seconds into my ride. Classic. So, once I stopped shaking and did a quick body check, I got back on my bike and thought about continuing the ride, but as I left the scene my neck was getting pretty sore and I could tell I was not thinking so great, so I rode to the firestation where Chris was working and had him look at me.
From there we went to the ER to get x-rays and make sure nothing was broken. Good news, I am fine, I have some good muscle soreness, my bike has a big chuck taken out of the new paint job and I may be out of a training wheel, but that is about it. So yesterday I rode 6 minutes and 40 seconds, I logged it and I will try again tomorrow.
Let it go,
Gina

Wow!
My wife and I have a one year-old son, Brady, and it is all we can do to fit in a daily workout, much less compete in a triathlon!
Whew…
